Shot Count Analysis

Katy Perry ft Snoop Dog- California Gurls
There are 35 shots counted in the first minute of the video, the majority of these are not close up shots but are pans across the scene to begin the video.
There are approximately 140 shots overall through the video and at least 100 of these are focused on the lead singer Katy Perry. Towards the end of the video around 20 shots are allocated to Snoop Dog who features with Katy in this video. The meat shots of Katy Perry are shown a lot in this video as she is dressed attractively and a lot of the audience (male) will be interested in seeing the singer the most throughout the video. Despite Katy being the main attraction in the video, she portrays a story to the audience as well as lip syncing the song. The editing is quite fast paced and we see Katy in an unknown world with bright sky and cartoon like setting. The pace of the video reflects the beat of the song and we would expect to see a lot going on- similar to Katy’s other music videos. The style of the video seems aimed at a young audience and they would expect it to be fast an upbeat as the genre is pop. The shots are mainly medium close-ups on the lead singer as the camera is trying to capture the costumes. The setting is also very extravagant which means pans and tilts are used throughout to capture the background. The music lyrics are all about “California Gurls” as specified in the song title, but the video itself in a setting of candy land and with Snoop Dog as a master who watches over the land, doesn’t really fit with what Katy Perry is singing. She speaks of “The Golden Coast’ a lot throughout the song therefore you would expect to see this place as the setting for the video. The only conclusion I can think of is that the candy land is a sort of dream or haven and she is trying to say that California is a place of dreams as are the girls that live there.
